I based my thesis research on parents’ views regarding the support in place for their children with autism in primary schools in my local authority area. One of the things I found from my research was that this group of parents were having to take on more of a communicative role for their child (and having to be ‘a voice for their child’), and this was particularly the case when their children were able to stay calm and hold it together at school but then struggle to hold it together after returning home from school (e.g. perhaps by experiencing a ‘meltdown’ situation).
